Remember my How to Find Your Decorating Style post from a couple of weeks ago?
Are you collecting pictures of rooms you love – for inspiration? It’s not about wanting that room or changing everything in your house to be that. The purpose is to discover your favorite styling and let it guide you in your decorating journey.
Have you opened an “account” on Houzz? It’s free to use, and setting up an account is simple. How about Pinterest?
I wanted to revisit the idea of establishing your decorating style because it will be so helpful to you in the future. And, it’s also fun!
Reader Rhonda commented that her chosen style combination is Colonial/early American blended with antiques, chippie paint, and a little farmhouse, too.
Her home is painted with white walls, and the trims and moldings are colors in keeping with her salt-box-style house. She sent me a couple of pictures and said I could share them with you.
I can see that her antique pieces really stand out against the light walls, framed by the darker trim. (Perfect corner for the Christmas tree, too.)
Her style is timeless, traditional, yet homey and welcoming. The painted fireplace surround, mantle, and cabinetry are gorgeous! I love the dark green, and her blue and white dishes look so nice against it! What a great way to get color into a room without darkening the entire space. The soft white walls keep the room light without feeling stark and sterile.
While the Colonial style isn’t a proclaimed choice in my decorating collection, I could totally live there! My love of antiques, occasional chippy and farmhouse overlap her list so much that I would feel right at home here. (Thanks for sharing, Rhonda!)
Additionally, we appreciate and enjoy the spaces of others because of how we feel about them. Our spaces become who we are – reminders to all the world of our personality, character, our impact on the lives of others…our footprint, so to speak.
That’s what gets me jazzed about decorating and design!
I visited a friend while we were in Atlanta in June. Her home hasn’t changed in the 25 years I’ve known her, and she apologized for it. I said,
No, quite the opposite!
Her home is just as beautiful today as it was the first time I walked through her front door. That’s not because she has focused on occasional updating and keeping her decorating current. It’s because her plums and greens were “her” when she decorated originally, so it (and she!) has never lost the charm!
Do you get what I’m saying? We don’t need to strive to have the latest trends…change fixtures with the magazine ads…transform paint colors with the newest color palette…all of that. Who could keep up? Be true to who you are.
So, if you don’t know who you are in your decorating style, start collecting room pictures and figure it out. You’ll love living in your home so much more once you get comfortable with the styling you love…and follow that.
