You must think I’m a crazy person for sharing so many fall pillow ideas lately from thrift store finds. Ha! I forgot to mention a thrift store vest as being an option. It’s so simple! (Or, should I say sew simple?) This one should be the final pillow for now.
I had to share this because some of you may have the perfect old vest inside your closet right now. You could save a trip and “pillow thrift” your own vest. Although, I can’t imagine giving up any of my own. I love wearing a vest in cool weather. Do you?
The zippered pocket detailing of this vest for a pillow adds just the right little something-something. (No telling what secrets we’ll hide in there! A tissue for cold-weather runny-noses…lip balm…a snazzy place to hide a door key? Endless possibilities…)
Turn the vest wrong-side-out and pin your pillow cut measurements with the zipper aligned in the center.
Slide the zipper open part-way, snap the snaps, and pin the closure securely as if it were zipped.
Stitch along the bottom edge (very carefully at the zipper portion). I hand-stitched the part right at the metal “start” to the zipper since the sewing machine wouldn’t go over that easily!
Next, stitch the other three sides. At the corners, you may have to follow the armhole to connect with the upper pins. The corners may be slightly smaller, but I promise mine isn’t noticeable at all.
As you stitch across the upper front, be very careful as you stitch over the zipper. We want no broken needles, right?
After stitching, it’s so easy to slide your hand inside the opening, unsnap and unzip, then invert the “vest”. I’ll share another little secret if you promise not to tell. I didn’t trim around my seams. I left everything attached so the pillow would be more full and cushy – even the collar! Who knows? If I get desperate for a new vest…snip…snip! (Grin.)
Here it is on the swing with a maroon plaid fall shirt pillow I made with the same process as the video I shared two weeks ago.
This quilted vest makes a soft and very cushy pillow for fall – and winter, I believe.
So…do you want to go right now and dig deep into your closet for an old quilted vest? What treasures will you hide in your vest pillow pockets?
Wish you could sew? Now you can!
