I thought it would be fun to dig into the archives and review a few recipes that are perfect for warmer temps outside. While we’re at it, I’ll share some southern-isms along the way.
I’d have a tizzy over this Southern Chickpea Salad right about now. I didn’t make it last year at all, so I’d raise the roof (which means to make a loud and joyful noise) for this one, y’all!

Grillin’ is what it’s all about in hot weather. Who wants to heat up their kitchen and ruin a gooder’n snuff air-conditioned house in summer? Grilled Bruschetta Chicken is one of the recipes we love to grill without feeling guilty as sin for eating it.
Steak, too! It’s the freshly chopped tomatoes and shredded cheese bruschetta on top that make me happy as a tick on a lazy dog. Any grilled meat puts HH in hog heaven. Period.
For summer quick meals, we love our Oklahoma Onion Burgers. They make us happy as pigs in mud!
Call us bull-headed. Even though this is a hot side dish, we southerners like to Southern Style Our Field Peas after shelling a mess of peas.
Fresh tomatoes are fine as frog hair (maybe not so appropriate for food) when easily transformed into Roasted Balsamic Tomatoes!
And, Summer Squash Rolls are gooder’n grits! (But HH wouldn’t say so. Not much tops Garlic Cheese Grits in his world. You’ve heard me say this before – as HH says about grits or biscuits, that dog ‘el hunt!)
On the sweet side of life, Berry-Lime Sorbet cools us down real nice (real nice or right nice, as apposed to uglier than homemade sin). This healthy treat won’t make you fat and sassy, either.
When Spunky Daughter is outta kilter, Shake-Like Fruit Smoothies will help her be up to snuff again! This treat could make you want to slap your mama, but why bite the hand that feeds you, right?
Recently, I flung a cravin’ for this Chocolate Syrup to ‘”Die”t’ For. It’s always tasty with fresh strawberries. In hot weather, I eat the syrup cold (right out of the refrigerator) with cold strawberries. Yum!
One bad thing that happens when I eat too much of whatever I’m cravin’ is that I’m not worth shootin’ after filling my stomach full as a tic.
