Do you have dirty little secrets? I guess we all do.
We’ve lived in this house for over six years, and I haven’t done much to doll up my laundry room. Just to give you warning, this post is not a home tour or any part of what might become one.
Think I have enough hangers over the washer and dryer? Thank you, Fun Son, for bringing all your hangers home from college (finally!) after I’ve been
nagging asking you nicely all year.
OK, I’ve done the basics, like hanging curtains I brought from our former house and throwing a few decorative things on top of the cabinets.
I added a small table so we could leave a light on for Trudy when we leave her in here while we’re away. And a trash can. Can’t have a laundry room without a trash can.
We recently canceled our land line, and the phone jack is behind that picture I dug out of the attic. I literally hung it (too low) with the picture hanger wire plopped over the screw in the phone plate. Aren’t I
This is the area we pass through when coming and going, and also through the door to the left from the kitchen (another door to the left, not pictured) to my office nook and the family room. So many doors and openings! This is actually the only full wall in the laundry room.
The cabinet and sink you see below are great for storage, but the mirror – yuk! – needs help. Why have I done nothing with that?
I hung a picture over the counter, pretending that would help. (Can we say delusional?) That’s about it. The other things you see there are propping up the wall paper, which is our subject today. And you thought I would never get to it!
MIL (you know, Mother-in-law) gave me 5 double rolls of this toile wallpaper a few years ago. She had planned to put it in her laundry room but, apparently, changed her mind. Or, maybe it was a hint for me to do something with this room. Aren’t MILs nice to be subtle sometimes?
I really like the wallpaper, too. But, for a while, wallpaper has been out. And, if you’ve ever had to remove wallpaper from an entire house (our former house), you hesitate to ever put any of it on a wall again.
It’s hard to see by this picture, but the wall is a butter color, and it matches exactly the lighter color in the wallpaper. The two other rooms (besides the green kitchen) that connect with this room are the mud room and my office nook – both with the butter color paint on the walls. I’ve enjoyed the continuity of that, but this paper coordinates well.
So, this paper has been sitting in a closet upstairs. I’ve looked at it several times, trying to decide what to do with it. I almost put it in my pantry, but the print was so busy…and the ladies are doing laundry, not straightening shelves of dry goods.
Have I mentioned I like this paper? See? I’m already almost heading to the closet for the wallpaper paste! I get impulsive and talk myself into things without waiting to be sure. (Although, you’d think I’d be sure after thinking about it for three years while the paper sat in the closet!)
Do you want to know what got me started thinking about this paper again? It was HER – the blogger that contacted me, saying we live close to each other.
Can you imagine? Here I am, thinking I’m all alone out here in The Land of Making Do. And, up pops this blog message from someone I don’t even know. And she lives about 30 miles from me. That may seem like a long way to you, but when you’re 30 minutes from everything, she’s close! Practically a neighbor, y’all.
Anyway, you have to go see her laundry room. But, you have to promise to come back, because we’re going to have a vote. OK? You have to promise, because you’re going to love her laundry room, complete with toile wallpaper and great decor on top of her cabinetry. You’ll see why I started thinking about this whole toile thing. Because hers is beautiful!
Here is the link to her blog (as I’m crossing fingers that you’ll be back) – HER BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRY ROOM.
OK, so happy to have you back! Didn’t you love it?
Thank you for your patience with all the details of my little ole laundry room. Here’s the picture again, so you don’t have to scroll back up and down again. I hope you can see the wallpaper well enough.
Here are my concerns:
- The background is almost the same color as the walls in the kitchen and breakfast room, the next room over. Too much green?
- The print is very busy. (Appropriate, because I get very busy in this room, and often.)
- The window treatments would have to go. (No problem. I can sew, right?)
- The attic lady picture would need to go back to the attic. Something less busy would need to cover the phone jack. (I love shopping and thrifting, after all.)
- And the stuff on top of the cabinets should probably come down.
I wonder if I should just wallpaper the sink wall and the attic lady picture wall. Those walls would be easy, without moving the washer and dryer out to wallpaper behind it, or climbing above those tall cabinets to paper above them…you get the picture. Wouldn’t that save time and possibly be just as effective?
I have so many other things that need to be done. Don’t you, too? So, you understand, right? If it would look weird, you’d tell me, right? I need honesty here, not just what you think I want to hear. (This so sounds like whining and begging for help. Oh! I am.) I’d never bother you if it was about curtains, but walls are a different matter altogether.
OK, so I’m taking a vote. Pick one of three:
- No wallpaper. Leave the room alone.
- Wallpaper entire laundry room.
- Wallpaper two walls, sink wall and attic lady wall.
Please leave me a comment and tell me. Your opinion really does matter. 🙂
Thank you for helping me with my dilemma! Y’all are so talented with your decor, and I have full confidence that you’ll be honest with me here. And, I trust your judgement.
