Medicine Cabinet Transformed

Medicine Cabinet Turned Garden Seed Storage DIY @ CurtainQueenCreates

Do you remember last month, when I was trying to decide on toile wallpaper for the laundry room (Help!  Opinions, Please?)?  I posted this picture (among others) that day.

Original Laundry Room

I haven’t yet completely decided about the wallpaper, but I had wonderful ideas from some of you.  My hesitation to forge ahead with the wallpaper might be a sign.

Do you live with something every day, not really paying it much attention?  That’s what I’d done with this mirror.  In the picture, it just “jumped off the wall” at me.  Yuk!  With its beveled edges, it wasn’t totally unadorned.  Just ugly.  Plain.

You could argue that it’s just a laundry room, so, what does it matter?  For starters, it’s practically the first thing you see when entering from the mud room at the back door.  Yes, I could have added trim molding around it to give it a frame.  If I hadn’t already found this old medicine cabinet at my favorite rehab supplier, that’s probably what would have happened.

Cabinet Original Finish

I love to add anything that gives me more storage options.  Do you?  When I bought the cabinet, I had a whole other plan completely.  It would have been used in the laundry room, but in a totally different way.  (I’ll share more on that another day.)

Anyway, I love Annie Sloan’s French Linen paint, especially with the dark wax that gives it such depth.

ASCP Painted Cabinet, French Linen @CurtainQueenCreates.com

This color would look fine with the wallpaper, if I decide to add it later.

I wish I’d remembered to take a totally before picture of the cabinet.  Its 80’s styling screamed for an update.  Brass knob and hinges, grainy oak wood, and a little of that “faux wood” stuff included (shhh – that can be our little secret).

Painting Tip

As Ms. Sloan shows in one of her website videos, I painted right over the knob and hinges.  Everything, inside and out, top and bottom, got a coat of French Linen.  I then rubbed in the clear wax, which she says to do before adding the dark wax.  I like to follow instructions, sometimes, especially when trying something new.  (Tweaking is what gets me into trouble, y’all.)

Seed Storage Solution

As for the storage organization, I gathered a few shelf-sized items from around the house.

Plant Tag Storage

A friend keeps me supplied with my favorite peach tea, so I’ve got several of these tins that I love.  A bonus:  no need for a “printable”!

Opened Seed Packet Storage

I love having reminders of my friends.  Don’t you?

Plant Markers

All sorts of items can hold seeds, y’all.

Pill Bottle Seed Storage

Labels can unify random items.  I used all my book plates before the Mentos labeling, y’all.

Remember to label your seed storage, including the year and who gave them to you.

Gum Bottle Seed Storage

I know my cabinet storage may seem random, but I like using what I already have.

Besides, I wanted to share a little inspiration, maybe an idea or two, just to get you thinking in different directions for your storage solutions.  That’s what happens to me when I visit other blogs.

Oh, I almost forgot.

Hole in Wall

Since the cabinet needed to be hung higher than this unused wall outlet that the builders left behind, I made a little sign out of scrap wood and chalk paint.

Wash Sign

I have to laugh now, because I was thinking “laundry wash”, not “wash your hands wash”.  But, it’ll be OK if someone wants to leave me some coins for washing their hands. 😉

Happy, blessed day, y’all.

Thank you for visiting! ~ Just a note to remind you to follow me through email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Google+ or Hometalk.  Also, I’d love it if you shared Curtain Queen with all your sweet friends.  Thanks, y’all.

I think it is so lovely. I am wondering why you chose not to take out the wall and recess it? I am just curious and all, cause I am so space limited.

Some things are just not worth the trouble of breaking through sheet rock and framing the studs. 😉 I’m glad you like it.

Also, I just can not stand WordPress…. but maybe it is my lack of knowledge to use it. I can NEVER remember how to sign it because it won’t let me sign in the way I prefer. So any help on this….. maybe a blog on how to use Word Press or how or what ever would be beneficial to other than myself.

And I do not like the wallpaper, but that is just me. I would sell it and let it go…. tell me what you think of my answer and please do not be upset with me?

I learned much about WordPress by taking an online course through Ed2go. Previously with Blogger, I was always frustrated with their limitations. I’ve found WordPress to have many things provided with the push of a button. I guess I could do a post or two about some unique WordPress features. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll think it over. 🙂

Ok, so you just paint over all the hardware with ASCP and proceed with the clear wax and then the dark wax? Is the hardware going to chip? Seriously, I don’t have to remove it? Help Kim! I am about to paint a large secretary in my family room and I just looked at all the hardware and thought, “I will never be able to remove all that” so really, shoot me the truth here! Thanks! Your cabinet looks great, that’s hilarious about the wash, 5 cents, which is an adorable sign by the way!

Thank you. Jenna, it is that easy!! My hardware isn’t chipping. I didn’t sand this cabinet as much as others, because the wood beneath is u-g-l-y; therefore, I didn’t sand any paint off the hardware. It looks really good to sand part of it and let the shiny gold show just a little – awesome! I’ll be posting a red dresser soon that shows that look. I’m liking Annie Sloan paints a lot but so pricey, I’m starting to try cheaper paints with same method. Not sure I like the wax deal. I’ve always been a polyurethane girl. Keep me posted on how your secretary is coming along, please.

Wow! That saves a lot of prep time and “being careful to paint around it” time to just paint the hardware…and it looks great!!! Thanks for that furniture painting tip. I have not tried the French Linen color (just Old Ochre and Old White) but it looks really pretty. That is a good tip to share about the wax…I wish I had done that on the first piece that I tried the dark wax on…it took me forever to knock back the darkness.

    • says

Yes, and on subsequent pieces, I learned to rub a lot more thoroughly and get 99% of the wax off. This avoids the sticky factor you can have from leaving too much on your piece. It seems like such a waste of wax, but the end result is better. Hope you have a great weekend!

Great medicine cabinet. I also think the sign is so neat. Put a little tip jar by the sink and maybe you will get enough money to purchase a coke. I like your prices, of course giving it that retro look.
Thanks for your visit, I didn’t see an email address for which to respond. Have a blessed week, Ginger

That’s strange about the email address. Most comment sections require it, so I usually enter it with my comment. Anyway, thanks for the visit back and the medicine cabinet compliment. 🙂
