PAM and HBD (Painter Artist Mom and Handy Builder Dad) visited on their way home from the family reunion we had over Labor Day weekend.
A discussion I had with PAM reminded me I hadn’t shared a dirty little secret I’d kept for months in our upstairs TV area. And, you thought I was always so transparent and completely honest with you! Ha!
I was talking with HBD about the issues we had a while back with the carpet under an upstairs window becoming wet. It must have been happening a long while without our knowledge. I discovered this unsightly mess one day while putting things away.
Yikes! Even the cabinet door was discolored along the bottom edge from mildew. Is that the nastiest looking stain you’ve ever seen? I thought the carpet was ruined forever and too far gone to salvage from the horrendous mold damage.
If the maid (moi!) would have done her job better, we would have been alerted to the problem earlier. So much for propping a cabinet door from HBD against a wall by the window for months. That’s what I get for not putting things away sooner!
Father Google and I had a brief research session, and I found a video for removing a stain such as this.
I only had yellow ammonia, but I thought it was worth a try.
Here’s the stained carpet again – before application #1.
This is the wet carpet after application #1. It was amazing how the mildew disappeared as I scrubbed the ammonia down into the fibers (with a small stiff brush). Most of the black staining simply vanished. And, then the “rinsing” stage with the peroxide made it even better. I was amazed! (Yay, no ruined carpet!)
A few tiny spots remained, so I decided to let it dry and hit it again the next day.
After letting it dry overnight, it was time for the second treatment on those tougher spots.
After the second treatment dried and then got wet again once or twice until the leak was repaired, the mildew didn’t grow back again. (Yay!)
The leak is for sure repaired now, and after a month of no wet carpet, it looks pretty good in that corner of lots of shadows.
Can you believe how horrible the stain looked when I discovered it – and that I kept this secret from you for so many months?
It just goes to show you…you never know what secrets others hide inside their homes. Ha!
Do you have a product that cleans everything (even mold in carpet)? Is it something we all should know about? Please share it! 🙂
