I was hanging out in Ecclesiastes recently while writing a post for the Jubilee Journey group – you know, the group that’s reading through the Bible this year. My post had a specific focus in Psalm 90 about making our efforts successful.
Let’s review Ecclesiastes 3, beginning in verse 9.
What do people really get for all their hard work? I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can…[ ]…So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is why we are here! No one will bring us back from death to enjoy life after we die. (Ecclesiastes 3:9-12, 22)
Do you find satisfaction with work? It might have something to do with attitude. If we feel a sense of purpose, good purpose, it’s easier to have a positive attitude about what we’re doing.
As I discussed in the Jubilee Journey post, notice what the Bible says in verse 11,
He has planted eternity in the human heart.
We will never be satisfied completely with earthly pleasures. That includes our work. Is that why it’s sometimes hard to be motivated for work? I think maybe it is.
We have a spiritual thirst that can only be quenched by the Lord. Only God can satisfy us. When our job is within His will for our lives and we feel a part of His purpose, that gives us proper work motivation. It brings pleasure to use the gifts and talents God gave us in our work. We are His handiwork, and God takes pleasure in seeing us use the attributes He gave us for His ultimate purposes, our particular occupation.
Knowing God outfitted us for our job can give us happiness in our work. Sometimes, it’s actually joy. Joy comes while fulfilling God’s purpose in our lives. He does that.
He provides your joy.
Do you have joy in your job? Do you have joy today on this spectacular Sunday? The Lord is our Joy!
