The title to today’s topic reminds me of the “Jerry McGuire” movie, when his girlfriend told him, “You complete me.”
Oh, the world went crazy over that line! Every one of us has the desire to find completion. We often look to our mate to fill our heart with love, comfort, joy…everything to the full.
How many days after marriage did you figure it out? How long did it take to realize that your mate couldn’t give you every little (and big) desire of your heart? That’s a huge responsibility for anyone, so give the guy a break. Before you get too hard on him, imagine things in reverse. Would you want it to be expected of you?
Early in our marriage, I hit the moment of realization that my spouse wasn’t going to be there for me emotionally in the way that I’d hoped. Men aren’t wired the way women are wired. They don’t connect with us emotionally in the way we need. Who could do that, really, on a day-to-day basis?
God wired us differently for a reason. He wired marriage so that we need each other and bring one another great joy and fulfillment in some areas, but not all. He enabled us to find completeness only in Him.
In my case, when my mate was letting me down emotionally, I knew the answer couldn’t be other men. To leave a marriage only to eventually marry again and repeat the process could not be the answer. Is that why we see multiple marriages so often?
I remember asking God to protect me from temptations outside of His will for my life. As I spent time with Him in prayer and His word, I slowly began to realize He was fulfilling me emotionally. It wasn’t my husband’s job!
God knows us intimately. No man can know us as fully as God does, even though they can know us pretty well. God made us, after all. And, He loves us…completely, unconditionally, inside and out. He brings us love, comfort, joy…everything to the full.
Rather than expecting your spouse to complete you, turn to the Lord. He will complete you…
