Did you hear of the tragedy in Mobile Bay last weekend? A sailing race/event ended horribly. A sudden storm. Boats capsized. Lives lost.
All day last Sunday, I couldn’t get the picture out of my mind:
Missing loved ones.
Family members in the marina, waiting.
Waiting to see their loved one(s).
Waiting for news.
It’s hard to imagine the pain in that. Isn’t that every parent’s nightmare?
It could have been you standing there with your family, clinging to hope, waiting. It could have been HH and I.
Really. I’m serious…not just being hypothetical here. Literally, HH had talked with our son only a few minutes before our moments of great fear. He was in Mobile Bay on a friend’s sailboat (someone we didn’t know), enjoying their time on the water.
Their crew was supposed to take part in the race/event, but when they opened the sails early that morning, there was a rip in one of them. Not to be thwarted from sailing fun, they ventured out to troll around and enjoy the view…the peacefulness.
Later that day, they saw the storm coming. They were heading back – only one mile out from docking. That was our last text.
Only a few minutes later….
Things can change in an instant. I received a phone call from our son’s Sweet One. She was at her apartment and frantic. She’d received a quick phone call only moments before. Something to the affect that, “We’re in real trouble. It’s really bad.” He had something to say to her…in case it was the last time he had the chance to say what he wanted her to know.
THUD…prayer, unanswered phone calls and texts, searching weather maps, storms on top of them.
Where are they, Lord?
Please, protect them, Father.
Please, keep our son safe…all of them,
the entire crew…
and all the other crews in boats in those turbulent waters.
Lord, I pray for their protection.
Minutes seemed like days.
Finally, another call from Sweet One.
I just heard from him. He’s fine…on shore…told him never to scare me like that again!
(Thank you, Lord!)
Another call broke in – from Fun Son. Where are you? What’s happening?
I’m alive! (Yes, that’s all that mattered.)
What a time of terror, our fifteen or so minutes…the waiting to hear…imagining what could be happening to our son. And, we were hours away…helpless.
We praise You, Lord, for protecting our son!
Had God run His finger along that torn sail…to keep their boat from entering the race and to keep them closer to the dock? Maybe. It’s a comforting thing to imagine God protecting us in that way, isn’t it?
Our hearts break for those who lost loved ones in those Mobile Bay waters last weekend. Praying for them is the very best thing we can do for them.
In the video below, Francis Chan shows the reality of how small we really are from God’s perspective. And, we see how big He is – how mighty He is – to care for every little living creature. He is here. He is with us. His smallest finger can rescue you.
Isn’t that amazing? No matter how insignificant we feel, God loves us. He’s not as far away as we might think. He is right with you.
He loves you and cares for you.
It’s a spectacular Sunday, y’all. Let’s Praise our Lord!
