Five years ago, SD (Spunky Daughter) requested that we redo her bedroom into what she called funky fresh. What? “What’s funky fresh?” I asked. Over the course of two months or so, she chose her colors and explained the style she had in mind.
We had moved into this house only a year prior, and I had remade her window treatments from our other house, Roman Shades, to fit the new room. I didn’t want to make new curtains again, but the shades were made in a very traditional print, beautiful hydrangea with vines and leaves. Pretty…functional…but not funky fresh.
I packed away her curtains and matching bedding, which will be brought back to life at some point because I love it so much, and painted her room the colors of funky fresh.
We had an understanding. This would be her room until she goes to college (which will now be next year – gasp). As she has grown, we moved her twin bed into the attic. I had made twin sized bedding that matched her funky fresh room. Now with her queen bed, we added new and cheap bedding from Wal-Mart. There was no need in going hog-wild just for another year’s use.
Our continuing effort is to make her room look more her age, not the 12-year-old room we started with. During this next week, I’ll be sharing DIY details about some specific items in her room.
SD is enjoying using Dotty. To see how I transformed this $4 thrift shop vanity stool, go to Vanity Stool Update – Tutorial. But, not yet, of course. 😉
SD has a memo board that intrigues me. She writes poetry or quotes that speak to her heart at the time. This is the most recent.
As for the curtains, I lucked up on some $4 a yard fabric at a decorator fabric shop in Memphis soon after SD had chosen her colors. (The trim came from Hobby Lobby.) Don’t you love it when you stumble upon the perfect thing at the perfect time? It’s not a coincidence. I call it a God-incidence.
You might not think He cares about fabric, room decor, or funky fresh. But, when you’re conscious of being a good steward of the resources God has provided, He seems to lead you to the perfect thing at the perfect time.
When you know your teen will junk up their room (most do), painting the feature wall the same color as the window treatments brings a calmness to the space. It’s sort of an area to rest your eye from all the stimulation going on in the room.
Wal-Mart had these letters in raw wood. I primed them, and then SD and I had the most fun painting them. She was reminiscing recently about doing that little project several years ago.
I’m glad she remembers the times we did fun things together – special times. Sniff.
Because she won’t be here much longer. Sniff.
And she’ll be heading out into that big world where her dreams need to be bigger than her fears. Sniff.
And her actions just might need to be bigger than her words.
I’m thrilled you stopped by for a visit! ~ Just a note to remind you to follow me through email, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Google+ or Hometalk. Also, I’d love it if you shared Curtain Queen with all your sweet friends. Thanks, y’all.
