For Debbiedoo’s Seasonal Decorating Dollar Tree Party I was prepared to have a fabulous patio tablescape fixed up and ready to shoot. But it’s been raining. And raining. And raining. So, I couldn’t get out to the patio to do my decor and photo shoot.
I decided to sew, since I was stuck inside with all the rain. Hey, why not decorate my man? (Spunky Daughter was my model, y’all. HH doesn’t model.)
Summer time is grillin’ time! Since HH will usually be doing the grilling, I decided to make an apron with no frills – something appropriate for either gender. Sorry girls, no frillies today. Feel free to make one with all the frillies you’d like to have on your apron. 🙂
In preparation, I pressed the two required tea towels.
I would like to mention here that Spunky Daughter and Fun Son gave me a new ironing board for Mother’s Day. You think it’s not special. But, SD was listening (can you imagine?) when I said a time or two (or a million) that I really really really wish I had this big wide ironing board.
Aren’t they the best? Well, I think so anyway (wink).
I’ll give you a full report on the ironing board soon. It has lots of great features. I feel like a spoiled ironing queen when I use it. It’s large enough to iron tea towels quickly. OK, enough about ironing.
Let’s make an apron:
Cut a section from one of your towels for the bib part of the apron. I cut mine at 12″, which will allow an inch to finish that raw edge after cutting. (The remaining part of the tea towel will be used for the double pocket.)
You don’t want the apron to by too high at your neck, because you won’t be able to get the ribbon neck loop over your head. You’ll see what I mean when we get to that part.
Iron down 1/2″ along the raw edge of your cut bib piece. Iron down another half inch and stitch.
Lay out your full towel and attach the bib with pins, centering it.
Mine was about 5-1/2 inches from each end.
Now you’re ready to stitch the two together.
Add a double pocket:
Cut your leftover piece of tea towel to 9 or 10 inches, leaving the 3 factory-sewn edges intact.
Sometimes deep pockets don’t work well. But, I like these pretty deep. Since the stripes can run vertically for the pocket, I’m happy to break up the horizontal. (You know what I mean, don’t you?)
Finish the raw edge of the cut piece in the same way we did the bib portion. Pin the pocket to the apron a couple of inches from the bottom and centering it horizontally.
Sew the sides and lower edge onto the apron skirt to attach it. Then sew down the middle to divide it into two pockets.
Turn your apron face down and wedge the bib portion at each side, a couple of inches at the top and angled out as you get close to the skirt. Stitch to attach.
Cut ribbon lengths for your neck loop and ties. Pin everything in place and check for proper fit before stitching them on the apron. My ties were about 30″ long, but I like long ribbons for tying into a bow.
Sew the neck loop where it fits well and where you can get your head through there comfortably.
Now you’re done! (Except for the dolling up you may wish to do.)
I hope you get to Dollar Tree soon so you can make your apron. Two dollars is such a great deal for this washable quick-sew apron.
Happy sewin’ and happy grillin’!
