I’ve learned a lot about coconut oil recently, and I wanted to share how easy it is to replace some basics in your pantry – for cooking and for better health. Friday is usually recipe day, and this post will transform many recipes rather than only one.
You might think coconut oil would taste like coconuts, but it doesn’t. If you have over-developed taste buds and detect even a slightest hint of coconut flavor, look for expeller-pressed coconut oil.
Reason #1: Coconut oil doesn’t turn to a trans fat when heated.
Who knew? I used olive oil for everything, and it turns to a trans fat when heated. I’m sure there are other oils that don’t become a trans fat at higher temps, but I can say coconut oil is my new worry-free choice (extra-virgin being the best).
I now replace olive oil with coconut oil for sauteing – basically for cooking anything. (I still use olive oil for its own health benefits, but mostly for drizzling on a salad with vinegar. Never heated.)
I love the fact that coconut oil is readily available now. We can even buy organic versions at Wal-Mart or our grocery store inexpensively. A bonus is the new coconut oil spray in a can! I was so excited to see this at our super center, and I use it regularly. No more PAM! (Sorry, PAM…nothing personal. Wink.)
For example, I use the spray now when cooking Baked Sweet Potato Fries. I spray them with coconut oil rather than covering them with olive oil.
Reason #2: Coconut oil is antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiparasitical, and antiprotozoal.
It’s not only the oil. Anything pure from coconuts has the same benefit (caused by the middle chain fatty-acids it contains). When cold and flu season hits, we’ll be prepared with our coconut anything and everything to help fight the battle. It’s the same with bacterial illness that can follow a virus.
Coconut meat has three times more detoxifying fiber than most fruits and veggies. Coconut oil boosts and defends our immune systems. Count me in!
Reason #3: Coconut oil revs the body temperature for higher metabolism.
It burns more fat and keeps your body warm in winter! So…without doing anything extra, we burn more fat when coconut oil is in our system. (Sounds familiar – like the Oolong tea I mentioned in my Skinny Pumpkin Spice Coffee or Tea post.) I love the fact that I’ll be warmer this winter. You, too?
It’s already working, as I made some chocolate “treats” (with the oil, chocolate, and Stevia) to keep in the freezer. With such a high amount of oil, one chocolate cube warms me when I have a cold spell, which happens to me every day!
Are you wondering why I’m suddenly talking about healthy options for eating, fish recipes, “skinny” coffee or tea, etc.? I’m conducting a test. Soon, I plan to reveal all and share something revolutionary. 🙂
