My special word for 2014 was YET. More specifically, Bible verses beginning with the word YET were of special interest to me. And then, I decided to continue that focus for 2015. Did you notice I haven’t mentioned my word for 2016? And it’s almost the end of January!
Just as the word “yet” alerted me to notice what followed in those verses, the word IF has been grabbing my attention for quite a while. I realized late last week that God must be calling my attention to that word – especially when a verse begins with IF.
So, IF is my word for 2016.
IF can change everything. IF holds such possibilities. IF could change your life.
Sometimes an IF verse states an if-then directive.
The following verse was on my mind a lot last year as our country continued to deny God in all things, including the topic of same-sex marriage.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray,
and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven,
then I will heal their land and will forgive their sin. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
There’s a contingency that requires our action. The promise will be fulfilled IF we follow the direction in the IF.
Most IF verses offer a promise dependent on our action.
If you need wisdom—if you want to know what God wants you to do—ask him,
and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent you for asking. (James 1:5)
IF, in some verses, precludes the further meaning.
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
There are many Bible verses beginning with the word IF. Do you have any favorites to share on this spectacular Sunday? Do you have a focus word for 2016?
